We invite you to visit our place or we can come to yours, to talk about the possibilities of taking your project from ordinary to inspired.
Where we’ve come from
Lewis’s Department Stores Ltd were established in 1944 and widely promoted as the Stores that Value Built. For many years Lewis’s were department stores, selling not just Curtaining and Soft Furnishings, but also Manchester, Fashion Fabrics, Ladies and Children’s Wear. By the 1980s Lewis’s had up to fourteen stores spread as far afield as Hawke’s Bay.
To meet a changing market Lewis’s then decided to move from general retailing to the position of a specialist. Lewis’s chose to concentrate on what we knew we could do better than anyone else – selling and manufacturing curtains and soft furnishings. The company was renamed to Lewis’s Home Fabrics Ltd and our range of fabrics and products increased in size and so did our workrooms, as they became more and more professionally equipped. We introduced our popular in-home service Dial-A-Curtain, and created Lewis’s Fabric Library, a lending collection of carefully chosen attractive fabrics that performed well in New Zealand conditions and offered real value. Lewis’s quickly became one of the three biggest home fabric retailers in New Zealand, which in turn provided more opportunities for us to get the best value for our customers.
As a privately owned, family company based in Wellington, our heart has always been here. We’ve maintained strong values of integrity, commitment and desire for excellence. It is the strength of this legacy and our reputation that led to Lewis’s selection as a supplier of furnishings for the refurbishment of Government House in Wellington in 2011. We are proud to say that no house is too small or too large, for us to create furnishings that will make a difference and enrich the lives of the people who call that house their home. The latest development of our new Wellington Concept Store at Ngauranga Gorge, proves that we are a progressive company with a strong heritage. That means you can be very confident when you ask us to help with your decorating project.
